Johnny Buckley, Theatre Porter from Queen’s Hospital Burton, heard about Twycross Zoo's financial struggles after having to close due to the coronavirus outbreak and decided to do something to help.
Throughout the month of June, Johnny held a weekly virtual quiz for his colleagues to help raise money and support the zoo’s “Summer of Survival” fundraising campaign. In total, the virtual quiz managed to raise over £200.
The Parkinson’s Service at UHDB has been recognised internationally as providing ‘outstanding’ care by becoming one of 47 in the world to be designated as a Parkinson’s Foundation Centre of Excellence. This comes after an inspection by the Parkinson’s Foundation carried out in October 2019, and is the second time the service has been awarded this prestigious accolade.

UHDB has been granted £4 million to increase capacity in our two A&E departments which will enable colleagues to continue to provide safe care to patients during the busy winter months.

The Lymphoedema Service based at Royal Derby Hospital has become one of only 11 centres in the world to achieve special recognition for the care provided to patients. We are very sorry to announce the sad passing of Kim Cobb from Head and Neck Unit at Royal Derby Hospital due to illness. Kim had worked for the Trust for 41 years and will be known to many as Kim Love. She was a Sister for Head and Neck before retiring and returning as a nurse in the same department.
More than 500 UHDB patients have been able to access support at home for a “debilitating” sleeping disorder throughout the Covid-19 pandemic – thanks to the help of charity Derbyshire Blood Bikes. The volunteer group have played an enormous role in the Trust’s Clinical Measurement team being able to maintain its Sleep Clinic service, by providing support to patients with suspected or confirmed obstructive sleep apnoea.

A UHDB Consultant has been elected as the President Elect of the British Geriatrics Society (BGS) after winning a record-breaking number of votes. Professor Adam Gordon, an Honorary Consultant Geriatrician at Royal Derby Hospital, won the election with 25% of the votes, in a ballot that saw the highest turnout in BGS history.

We are very sorry to announce the sad passing of Debbie Furness, one of our Patient Experience Managers, due to a short illness. Debbie had worked at the Trust for nearly 30 years and was known by many people from the variety of roles she held during her career.
Staff on a Royal Derby Hospital surgical ward have been praised for the incredible lengths they have gone to during the Covid-19 pandemic to help our patients and colleagues alike. Ward 309 colleagues have been working flat out throughout the last few months and have managed to maintain close to 100% bed capacity during this whole period – which is among the highest rate across UHDB.
